UV Air Purifier for Your Home

Benefits of a uv air filter

Pollutants are present in the air that we breathe. This makes it important to take steps towards purifying the air within our homes and offices. If you suffer from allergies, lung issues, or asthma, air purification devices are simply good for your health. A new promising technology is purifying the air that we breathe in our homes. Referred to as a UV air purifier, these devices improve air quality by killing microbes present in the air.

Rather than using the normal method of filtration, UV air purifiers emit ultraviolet light to kill microbes as they pass through. While they are a newer product in the air purification industry, they have the potential of achieving promising results in improving the quality of the air that we breathe.

How UV air purifiers are better than the competition

Energy efficient

Traditional air purifiers work by pulling air through a restricted media filter to remove harmful components. This makes traditional filters significantly less energy efficient. A UV air purifier saves on energy costs by simply projecting UV rays that destroy harmful microbes without the restriction of a traditional filter.

No Filters to change

UV air purifiers don’t use any actual filters. Therefore, no dust or other particles can accumulate on the device’s interior during its operation. This makes the purifier easier to operate and maintain while reducing the risk of further air contamination due to a clogged filter.

More effective against germs

A UV air purifier is designed to specifically target and eliminate organic matter such as viruses, bacteria, and mold spores (but only when the spores are exposed to UV light for at least 2-10 seconds). In fact, the EPA refers to these air purifiers as “Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation Cleaners”, referring to their effectiveness as germicides (germ killers). This effectiveness against organic matter is derived from the UV radiation that the purifiers emit. These high doses of UV light are deadly to such germs.

Limitations of a UV air purifier

Limited effectiveness against other pollutants

While these innovative purifiers are effective against germs, they don’t eliminate other harmful particles in the air, such as dust. In addition, volatile organic compounds such as mold and bacterial spores need to be exposed to the UV light for at least 2-10 seconds before the spores are effectively sterilized. A UV air purifier is best used in combination with other air filters in order to achieve a comprehensive air purification result.

A UV air purifier eliminates mold spores when the spores are sufficiently exposed to the UV light. However, they cannot kill actual mold or tackle the growth of mold indoors.

Wear and tear

The ultraviolet bulbs used in a UV air purifier tends to wear down over-time and lose its effectiveness. In fact, the UV light’s power decreases by 15% every year. You will, therefore, need to regularly replace the bulb for maximum efficiency.

More research is necessary

The technology used is still relatively new in the industry. More research is necessary in order to determine their absolute effectiveness at purifying the air that we breathe. Current studies show that these purifiers can filter larger areas, making them viable for commercial properties as well as your home. They also operate quietly so are good for quiet offices or rooms.
